The LESB plays an important role in establishing statewide standards for the training and certification of law enforcement officers in Hawaiʻi. • Law enforcement officer from the county of Kauaʻi
  • Law enforcement officer from the county of Maui
  • A law enforcement officer from the state
  • Member of the public from the county of Hawaiʻi
  • Member of the public from the county of Kauaʻi

Law enforcement members must have 10 years of experience as a law enforcement officer and shall be appointed by the governor, with Senate confirmation not required.

Public members should meet the specified professional/educational requirements established by law: (A) Possess a master’s or doctorate degree related to criminal justice; (B) Possess a law degree and have experience: (i) Practicing in Hawaiʻi as a deputy attorney general, deputy prosecutor, deputy public defender, or private criminal defense attorney; or (iii) Litigating constitutional law issues in Hawaiʻi; (C) Be a recognized expert in the field of criminal justice, policing, or security; or (D) Have work experience in a law enforcement capacity.

“The work of the Law Enforcement Standards Board is essential to maintaining high professional standards and strengthening public confidence in law enforcement across Hawaiʻi,” said LESB Board Administrator Victor McCraw. “We are looking for individuals who bring experience, sound judgement and a commitment to public service. Whether you have a background in law enforcement or qualify to serve as a public member, this is an opportunity to help shape the standards that guide law enforcement officers throughout our state.”

Qualified individuals who are committed to professional excellence, accountability and public service are encouraged to apply and help shape the future of law enforcement standards in Hawaiʻi.
